ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: DECISION MAKING IN HEALTHCARE

my spiritual essay Printed from Peter Russell's site The Spirit of Now. Intellect takes you to the door, but it doesn't take you into on healthcare, the house. Talk given at 'Alternatives', St. Essay! Jamess Church, London, November 1989. (This is unedited transcript - so a bit rough in places.) Tonight is going to be different, certainly for me. Thesis On Healthcare! I've never done anything like this before, may never do it again - so it's a special night. When William first came up with this idea and asked me, he said We'd like you to kick the series off. My initial reaction was Oh great, fine, that would be nice to media compare do, a bit of fun, straight forward etc.. I remember I rang him up a few days later and said, My god!

What have I said yes to? I began to on healthcare realise how difficult it was. The first question that came to my mind was, What journey? What spiritual journey? As I thought more about it, I thought who am I to start talking about media essay spiritual journeys - in the sense that we're all on a spiritual journey. What have I got to say that anybody here couldn't say? We've all been on on healthcare our own paths, our own explorations. Allama Essay English! I started thinking what is thesis, a spiritual journey anyway.

In some senses everything that happens in life is university essay terms, part of one's spiritual journey. If I'm going to stand up here and give an on healthcare, autobiography, I might get up to year 2 in 45 mins - or might not. On my 40th birthday I decided to recap on my life, set aside a few days to try and actually just recap everything that had happened. At the university of leicester essay explained end of the thesis 3 days I got up to age 8. Career Essays! I just realised that when you start going back and remembering, so much stuff comes up. So I started thinking more about this and jotting down ideas that came and seeing other problems and difficulties. In the end I decided to try and pull it all together and trust that it resonates with your own journey. I think one of the dangers here is thesis on healthcare, that its easy for me to get into 'ego thing' - this is what I've done. One of the media challenges I think I face is not to do that. Although its focussing on me and my work, I want to go beyond that. I suppose the things I want to pull out are more what's been going on behind it - the thesis processes I went through, the motivations, the values, the difficulties.

And there's a lot of material in that, and I find myself probably for the first time in years actually needing notes to give a talk. I realised as I went into this there were so many little things which were actually important, which if I just start talking, I'm going to start forgetting some of the small things - which the more I've looked into it over the past few days, I've seen just how critical some of these things are. In fact the while process of preparation has probably been the most valuable thing about salvation essay this. I mean if William now stood up and said we couldn't have a talk tonight after all, it probably wouldn't bother me at all. The fact of having to prepare for it has actually been most interesting, and might suggest that if there's one thing you take away from this its maybe the inclination to thesis on healthcare sometime to put aside half a day or something to look at your own spiritual journey. Fascinating what comes up when you start looking at it. So first of all thank you William for having given me this opportunity to explore it myself. I noted one of the challenges is just to iqbal in simple be truthful, to really look at actually has happened - what is true rather than the idea. So as I look back in thesis, the past, things get very muddled sometimes between what was actually the truth and what I thought happened or was going on. The other two things I think are important.

One, as I already mentioned, is not to get into the position of me here and you there - to try and essays see it as something which is resonating with all of us, a common pattern which comes up in me in my particular way. I also realised there's a danger of almost belittling one's spiritual journey. Its probably the most important part of our life. And just realising how easy it was to say, Oh but that didn't matter, that was insignificant. Thesis On Healthcare! That's another challenge I want to hold - really actually giving things their due importance as we go along. The next question I looked at was how to do it. How to actually organise it. The route I've chosen is the obvious one - to do things in a temporal order, to go through what's happened in time because that seems the salvation essay most logical flow. Thesis On Healthcare! In that bringing out some of the patterns and some of the issues which I've seen going on. So where did it all start? Birth I suppose.

The first time I think I actually saw that there was a spiritual journey to be undertaken in one's own personal life was round-about the age of 19-20. That was when I was first really conscious that there was something that was happening which one could call 'a spiritual journey'. But looking back I can see that a lot was going on in childhood which was part of that , although I didn't appreciate it at the time. The first thing I can actually sort of look at and anchor upon was when I was about 7 or 8 when I first learnt to read to the stage where I could go to the local library and take out books. I found myself just taking out all the women in love essay books I could find that were simple enough for on healthcare, me to read on dolphins and university of leicester whales.

Somehow this intuitive fascination with dolphins and whales - I can't recall why or what it was about, but I just knew that was all I wanted to read about. I think I devoured everything that was available for children of that age group. Thesis On Healthcare! That became an on-going interest through out my life. This resulted in dolphins having been some very important spiritual teachers for me. Another thing I see that was going on in my childhood a bit later was the fascination with physics. In particular mathematics. Looking back I can see very much the media compare and contrast essay desire to really understand what the universe was about. This was the thesis way it first began to in simple manifest.

Mathematics for on healthcare, me was, and still is, fascinating because - there are actually two types of mathematicians. There's mathematicians who believe that maths is of leicester terms explained, something that humanity has created, and theres' mathematicians who believe that mathematics pre-exists the universe. I'm one of those who believe that mathematics exists even without a universe. So it was fascinating study for me: In studying mathematics one was actually studying something which was absolutely transcendent, in thesis, my view, to the universe. Other things which I noted down which I sort of thought interesting: I was reading a lot of science fiction. A lot of people disregard science fiction. Essay! For me its a fascinating area of writing, but particularly a lot of science fiction is actually concerned with issues around consciousness, with spiritual development. Thesis! Particularly in the 50's-60's a lot of the leading writers of women, science fiction were actually playing with I think some very very important ideas. And science fiction was the only place really they could write about on healthcare them, and get them listened to - a lot of interesting stuff going on there. And I was interested in terms, yoga and all these strange this that went on in the East.

Not in any spiritual was, I just thought it was fascinating that people could do all these strange things - lie on thesis on healthcare beds of salvation essay, nails. . Thesis On Healthcare! Something going on iqbal essay english in the mind, obviously. I remember at school: long philosophical debates on the nature of thesis, mind and free will and determinism and essay those sorts of things. On Healthcare! All of salvation essay, which now seem to fit into place, which didn't seem very significant then. I was also exploring altered states of consciousness in my own way. I'm sure there were things you all did, like lots of deep breathing, hyperventilating, spinning round, getting people to squeeze you and you found you went into funny altered states of consciousness. I remember I read a book on on healthcare out-of-body experiences and started trying to do that. Wasn't very successful, fortunately. And I also came across this technique which I developed which lasted for a couple of years - which i used to do as I was lying in bed at night. I don't know how I did it, but it was almost like remembering some state where I would actually put myself into iqbal in simple, a state - it had a very string metal image which I could best describe as a desert, but wasn't in any way a feeling that we have with the desert. It was a very warm feeling, but in which the mind became absolutely like a desert and it just went out in thesis on healthcare, all directions.

And just like this image I had for how my mind went. I used to really enjoy doing this before I went to sleep, when I was lying in bed. I used to get myself into this position, lying on my back, and sort of cruise off into this state which I thought was a lot of fun at the time - it just felt good. What also felt very interesting - I didn't actually think what it was, just a vaguely interesting state to dissertations policy go into. So things like this were going on - obviously something happening, and thesis I'm sure you can look back in your own childhood and salvation essay see lots of little things that were your own searching for something more. Probably, or may not have, crystalised into thesis, the idea of accounting as a essays, a spiritual journey. But I think the thesis actual awareness that there was some spiritual journey actually came when I left school and went to university. I was fortunate enough to go to Cambridge, which was particularly fortunate because the attitude at Cambridge is not one of 'you come here for 3 years to get a degree, study hard and accounting career get a good degree, that's what you're here for'. The attitude was 'sure there's lectures to go to, the on healthcare occasional exam to salvation essay take - but this is an opportunity for on healthcare, personal development and growth. You have here some of the best minds in the country - play with them.' Lectures were minimal. That's when things suddenly started opening up.

Because here were 10,000 other students, 10,000 other people my age, among whom were some who actually had sort of overt spiritual interests, who were actually exploring things in women in love essay, one way or another. Thesis! Very quickly through that first year, I sort of gravitated to people who were exploring similar things. Media Essay! I suppose I got to thesis know about 50 people or so who were playing around with looking at exploring themselves. Not just in the university - interesting enough it was a sort of culture that crossed the salvation essay university and into the town. On Healthcare! A lot of people from the normal town community were part of this sort of 'alternative group'. It was also totally anti-class.

There was a lot of class groupings at universities like Cambridge - people tend to stick with their classes. Iqbal Essay English! This group was a complete spectrum of the English classes and beyond England. We're now talking about the thesis late 60's. I went up in '65. That was the other great thing: actually being at Cambridge at that time, the late 60's - because there was a whole social shift going on which was particularly focussed in the student population. I think the thing that really pushed me into accounting career essays, it was that also at on healthcare that time people were discovering a lot of new ways of producing altered states of consciousness.

Basically Chemical ways, which was in a sense very much a symbol of the accounting career 60's. I found myself spontaneously initially drawn into that. Thesis! It was like - here was something that was fascinating. And that was a phase which just lasted just a reasonably short while. But it was fascinating looking back to see how it wasn't something that was put onto me, it was that something took me there looking for salvation essay, something in it. I suppose I really got involved in that whole social shift, almost upheaval, that was going on which was a complete challenging of almost all values, all established ideas. In one way or another we threw almost everything we'd been taught out the window.

We were the long-haired rebels. Everything was thrown out - it was like starting from thesis on healthcare scratch almost, in terms of essay, our values of what was right, what was wrong, what was important, how did one do things. It was a fascinating time to be living through. I think I feel eternaly blessed to thesis on healthcare have been born at the time I was, to have been in my late teens and media and contrast essay early 20's through that period of thesis, history - and to have been at Cambridge ( or one could have been at Oxford or a few other places) but where there was that openness and career opportunity to explore. (And there was something else - I didn't note it down - will probably come back to me later) There came another realisation that was going through this whole phase in society, which happened towards the end of the 60's. Very much was the feeling that biochemical means of producing altered states of consciousness were not the way. I think a lot of people went through the shift: They realised there had been a fantastic door - a fantastic window if you like - onto different ways of looking at thesis reality that allowed one to take down some of the women in love essay old ways of seeing reality, and looking at things in a completely different way. But there was the realisation that anything that could be done with chemicals could be done naturally.

This produced the whole fascination with Eastern religion, mysticism. It was probably best exemplified by the Beatles, who in '67 suddenly made that shift and thesis on healthcare got involved in meditation. That was very much a reflection of what was happening in society. The Beatles were actually almost like mirrors that were held up to in love essay society at that time. Thesis! I often ask myself why is it that pop stars got so into society that it wasn't just kids who loved them , but the old ladies as well, housewives - people in as a, almost all sectors of thesis, society - why did they get their OBE's (or MBE, whatever) - how come? And there was something that they were actually reflecting back through their songs which was happening in society. It wasn't just the Bealtes, it was people like Dylan, Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane - lots of people were doing this reflecting back what was happening to salvation essay society through music. It was almost like music was the communication medium of the time, the lyrics. It wasn't coming out in writing, but it was music where people sharing their experiences, breakthroughs that were happening.

And the Beatles were very much channels for that - they like many others suddenly went though the thesis shift of salvation essay, 'hang on! There's something here that's much deeper', and turning to looking at spiritual development in a much more classic way, and saying what was happening in the East. That was something which became part of my own shift. I began, I think for the first time really seriously reading a lot about different religions. I remember reading Tibetian stuff, Buddhist, Sufi, started reading various Zen books. This was really an thesis on healthcare, active searching now: looking for where was this truth, this wisdom; and beginning to go along to start meditation. In Cambridge, again one of the women in love essay great opportunities: There were many different meditation groups, and meditation teachers around. I started practising a form of Buddhist meditation, and thesis on healthcare looking at media essay various things. Then one day I was walking through the library, and this book sort of fell off the shelf into thesis on healthcare, my hands.

You know - it didn't literally, but I was walking along and it 'fell off the career essays shelf into my eyes' first of all, and thesis so my hand went up and salvation essay took it down. I flipped through it, and thesis thought this looks interesting, and put it together with a pile of 5 or 6 other books I'd picked up, and took it back to my rooms in Cambridge. It sat there at the bottom of the desk for about a week. I finally got through to of leicester explained it, and thesis opened it. It was I think Maharishi Mahesh Yogi's first book The Science of terms explained, Being and thesis Art of accounting career essays, Living. I started reading this and thesis on healthcare something just happened. Everything he was saying was the exact opposite of everything I'd been reading, or had been taught, or had thought. He was going counter to everything. Women! Yet it made much much more sense. Basically what he was saying was that there was a process that spiritual teachings go through with time, whereby things get distorted over thesis, time. Spiritual messages never get clarified as one person passes them onto another.

Everybody distorts them from university of leicester essay their own level of ignorance. On Healthcare! That what you end up with after time are relics often turned completely inside out. He was showing how it had happened in time, and how all spiritual traditions go though this process. What he was talking about in terms of the salvation essay true nature of the human mind - he was talking about the ultimate nature of the thesis mind being one of happiness, and the need to recognise that actually made meditation a simple process, effortless process. Where all these other teachers were talking about the effort, and the discipline that was required. University Essay Explained! Everything was juts turned inside out, but in thesis, a way that made sense to my own experience. It also made sense of university explained, what the other teachings were really getting at. That was a profound experience. On Healthcare! I just remember I read this book, sat down almost at one sitting. My next act was - whatever he's writing, whatever's behind this I must try. So I got myself down to London about a week later.

London was the only place you could learn Transcendental Meditation in those days. So I traveled down, actually commuted I remember, from salvation essay Cambridge for on healthcare, a few days, and got myself taught by dissertations education somebody who became very important in my life for several years - particularly for about 6 months to a year (who some of you may know/remember) - Dr. John Alison, who was a medical doctor who had got very interested in on healthcare, T.M. himself about policy 10 years previously when Maharishi had first come out to the West, teaching T.M.. Dr. Alison was somebody who had a wonderful Western mind in terms of thinking, analysis. There was no woolly thought here. Thesis! A wonderful perception also of media, what meditation was. I spent a lot of time with him, particularly over thesis, the following 6 months, just sitting in groups, listening to him,. often just sitting with him, chatting about ideas.

What he gave me, which I needed so much, was an intellectual satisfaction. He really satisfied my thirst for a complete water-tight understanding of what meditation was and how it fitted in to university of leicester all the different traditions. I want personally to acknowledge how important that was for me, having somebody who could fulfil that for thesis, me. Different people have different needs, but for that, for me, was the key thing: Being able to essay really fit it into on healthcare, my intellectual understanding. About the same time I actually started a meditation group in Cambridge. I wasn't teaching it then, but I started a meditation group with a friend there. We brought teachers in. So I was beginning to move on in a way, particularly with meditation. T.M. seemed to me - What Maharishi had done was in a way take a technique which was the essence of a lot of in love, meditation processes, and find a way of delivering it to thesis on healthcare the general public, in a way that wasn't unduly tied up with all the allama iqbal spiritual paraphernalia and doctrines that normally surround things. You didn't have to thesis get on accounting essays with all this other stuff.

You could just meditate - that was the fascination for on healthcare, me. Plus of course the experience. I was actually now introduced to something which was on a daily level, daily spiritual path. This triggered another shift in terms of what was happening at essay Cambridge. Up until this time I'd been doing physics - actually applied mathematics which is thesis, very close to allama in simple physics. On Healthcare! I'd done that because I was fascinated by it, I was good at it, it was my best subject at media and contrast school - and if you don't think too carefully you go to Cambridge and on healthcare you do what you were best at at school - it makes sense. And it was a fascinating intellectual achievement to be able to sit down and dissertations education with pencil and paper: from first principles, these mathematical principles which I believe lie beyond the universe - using these principles to actually calculate that the atomic element hydrogen must exist, must take a certain form etc, and behave in a certain way.

One can actually mathematically predict the thesis existence of hydrogen. A fascinating intellectual achievement. I Probably couldn't do it now - I've forgotten all the of leicester terms explained maths - but it was a fascinating achievement. And yet it suddenly struck me: So what? Hydrogen is just the beginning of the universe, the first simplest atom. Nobody could actually go on with the next stages mathematically. And it was telling me nothing about human beings - the other end of evolution, the human mind - it was telling me nothing about thesis that.

And so I went through a crisis. It manifested as a major depression for dissertations policy, me, which went on for about six weeks or so. Not feeling at all happy with what I was doing. I had a tutor at Cambridge who was quite wise in retrospect, in the way he handled it. He walked up to me one day and said, You're obviously unhappy with what's going on. Thesis On Healthcare! And I bumblingly told him. (I'd done nearly two and half years of maths by now.) He said, Either finish off your degree in maths at the end of education, this year, or go away - take a year off and think what you want to do, come back and thesis do something completely different, or come back and do maths. And you have to decide by mid-day on Saturday. - which was the wise part. At one minute to midday on Saturday I had no idea what I was going to women essay do. At mid-day I decided to take a year off - step back from the whole thing for a while - I won't go into on healthcare, that story. The question was I thought I wanted to come back and do philosophy, but I realised at Cambridge doing philosophy was just doing more mathematics.

I chose to do psychology, which at Cambridge was much more the direction I wanted to in love move in thesis on healthcare, - which was really understanding 'this thing' (mind). What is the human mind, how does it work? So I went back and on psychology, finished my degree in allama iqbal essay, that. And all the time I was deepening my work with meditation, and realising that as soon as I finished my degree and got freedom from Cambridge, what I wanted to do was actually go out and study meditation in depth. So I took myself off to India, where the Maharishi was running training courses to train teachers in meditation. I decided I didn't want to teach meditation. That's not what I was about. But since he was running this course which gave the most wonderful background in meditation, it was a wonderful opportunity and I wasn't going to tell anybody I didn't want to be a teacher. I was just going to go there and enjoy the opportunity.

Which was one of the most - odd to say one of the most important times in on healthcare, my life - it was a very important time, just to be sitting with somebody like that with a relatively small group of people. Not just listening to terms him talk, but to be able to thesis on healthcare have somebody of that stature, and os that spiritual experience, to compare be able to just sit with them in their bedroom late at night and pin them down on spiritual issues and thesis on healthcare questions. And we had this group of people who'd somehow congregated there at and contrast this time, who nearly all had come from a similar background - they were all students - mostly, a large percentage of students, a lot from America - with this real quest. Thesis On Healthcare! I think we grilled the Maharishi like he'd never been grilled before - he had to be exact on everything. Plus doing some very long meditation retreats. AT one stage we were meditating virtually solid for a week, 24 hours a day, which was fascinating - as again the whole emphasis was on not just having the media and contrast learning, one's got to have the experience. Anyway to cut a long story short - I could talk all day about that period in India - At the end of it I was desperate to become a teacher!

I remember one of my concerns was that he wouldn't make me a teacher. Anyway, came back to England and got very involved in the T.M. Thesis! movement for some years. I ran a meditation centre in Cambridge. I went back and did a post-graduate degree in Computer Science, and at the same time ran a centre. Which actually came by incredible syncronicity. - It seemed incredible at the time - one thing I've learned through all of this is syncronicities seem to be right-on. By syncronicity I mean those strange experiences, where things just absolutely fit into place. You walk around the corner and university essay there is the perfect person you should meet - those sorts of thesis, situations - those coincidences without any reason, which always seem to be perfect for your next step or whatever it is. - I got back from India and I arrived in Cambridge. I can't remember quite how it happened but I met somebody either that night or the next morning. I remember the next night I was sitting in dissertations education policy, somebody's room who was saying he wanted to set up a whole food restaurant in Cambridge and a meditation centre, and would I set up the meditation centre upstairs.

He'd already bought the on healthcare premises for the wholefood restaurant downstairs. And so we did (some of you may know Arjuna in Cambridge. The reason it was called Arjuna actually went back to stuff from India and the Bagavad Gita). That was syncronicity. And syncronicities started happening time and time again. I've noticed in women essay, my life: When I'm in touch with my self, syncronicities happen. If they don't happen, if life seems to be a drudge of on healthcare, trying to make it work, and things aren't falling into place, its usually a sign that I'm not in policy, place inside myself. I got very involved in on healthcare, the movement.

I was running something called The Students International Meditation Society in London, then became trustee of the dissertations education T.M. charity. Thesis! That led me, amongst other things, to writing my first book on meditation - The T.M. Technique . In fact it was my first book. Interestingly, I thought I wasn't a writer - I thought I couldn't write, cause all I'd ever done was write mathematical equations. I later realised that you can use that principle to write books and papers. I actually started writing a few papers on the whole issue of mind/brain relationship. Almost accidentally ended up writing - I didn't mean to. I sort of had this idea of doing a book, and wrote something up on it, and a curious syncronicity happened that night: I met an old friend who introduced me to another friend, who happened to iqbal in simple english know somebody else who was a writer, and said to me, Oh you want to get an thesis on healthcare, agent. And rang me up the next day and gave me the phone number.

I went along to see her and she said she'd never done anything like this before, don't know anything about meditation - maybe we'll see what happens. She rang me up three days later and salvation essay said, Something very surprising happened while I was at a cocktail party the thesis on healthcare other day. This publisher came up to me and said do you know anybody who might want to write a book on Transcendental Meditation? That's syncronicity. And that began another phase, which I call 'my phase of difficulty' with the salvation essay T.M. movement. When the book was published, a lot of people liked it. Then they started not liking things I said in on healthcare, it - people in education policy, the movement. And this book had the dubious distinction of actually being banned in the U.S.A. by thesis the T.M. movement. The reason was that I started talking about spiritual things, and tried to dissertations set T.M. in a spiritual context - which was exactly what it was for me - a technique which was a very efficient spiritual process. There was only one chapter in which I tried to thesis on healthcare set it in a spiritual context.

But the whole movement in dissertations policy, America was trying to say T.M. Is NOT a religion. And here was this book saying you know there's something spiritual about it. So the book got banned, by the T.M. movement. Not in the shops - but it meant no one was allowed to talk about it, or T.M. centres weren't allowed to sell it. (No, it didn't get burned in the street. . .) There was a process I then went through, which was like: I discovered because I was involved in teaching T.M. I was expected to think certain ways and say certain things, and on healthcare behave in certain ways. Media! For me the issue was trying to express what was true for thesis on healthcare, me. The reason I wrote the book was because I felt there was a lot that was being said about TM that was blatantly untrue, by people who didn't know what it really was. Also a lot of very muddled thinking going on compare essay about it.

I just wanted, from the thesis on healthcare best of m,y perception to try and put down a really clear survey of salvation essay, what it was. So it was slightly shocking to find it sort of thesis, thrown back like this. But then worse was to of leicester explained follow. I wrote a few papers where again I was trying to express what I felt was true, and these became disapproved of. I then committed a major sin - which was that I produced a (tape?) for Encyclopedia Britannica on relaxation. They asked me to produce this (tape?), and I though it would help people, a relaxation technique; nothing to do with TM that I could see. Thesis On Healthcare! But suddenly I discovered that if teach one sort of dissertations education policy, meditation you're not allowed to get involved in anything else. But my ultimate crime was I got asked by the BBC to produce a radio series on meditation in which I surveyed, I think it was 5 or six, sorts.

I looked at TM, Buddhism, Bagwan Ragnish, Christian meditation, Swami (Muktananda?) - basically surveying what I saw as some of the main movements in thesis, meditation. This of media and contrast essay, course was a major sin, and as a result was I got excommunicated. People were told not to speak to Peter Russell - I'm serious - and ti was a very painful time. Thesis! I say this not out of salvation essay, - I was actually wondering whether or not to talk about thesis this at salvation essay all, not normally something I talk about - I really want to mention it because of what it meant for thesis on healthcare, me in terms of the salvation essay hurt I went through, the pain at the time. On Healthcare! Its interesting just going back, its still there, some of it. Its something that I really felt so strongly for, and was wanting in my own way to support. It was like having everything pulled out from underneath me. I think the greatest pain of all in that was the fact that I then lost my personal contact with the Maharishi. Up until that time I'd probably been spending - going out, spending 3,4,5 times a year, maybe a week at a time, fortnight here and there - just sitting with him, meditating, listening, being with the latest developments of his thinking. Compare And Contrast Essay! Suddenly I found the door closed.

Not that he closed it, but people around thought I should be separated in some way from thesis what was going on. Accounting Career Essays! So it became very difficult. And that was also sad on an outer level, though I felt on an inner level that inner connection has never been severed. I suppose there was a choice - in one way there wasn't a choice. I mean the choice was I could tow the party line, and everything would be fine. But that was no choice. Thesis! For me, I had to follow my own truth. That truth took me on into other areas.

It was the essay english close of a phase. There had been about 7 years of this phase. On Healthcare! I didn't stop doing TM by the way - I still do. Its always been an important technique and I will probably use TM as a core meditation technique as long as I live. But I then discovered theres a lot of other things I began to learn from women essay other people. It was probably good that I was in this way thrown out, because I then broadened my social context. I'd become very much involved in on healthcare, that movement of people, and nearly all my friends at the time - all the other friends that weren't involved in meditation sort of essay, drifted away, distant contact - my main friends all involved in meditation. Thesis! Suddenly I went through a process of a whole new area of media and contrast, friends opened up.

Which I can best describe as people were in on healthcare, the consciousness movement - what is now sadly being called the 'new age group' (and I wish it never had) - people who are now household names, people like Jean Houston, Marilyn Ferguson, Willis Harman, those sorts of media and contrast essay, people. We sort of gravitated together, exchange of ideas - we started meeting at conferences. I found myself having a love relationship with California, almost commuting to California. I found there was so much that was going on in the States, particularly in California - really exploring how to take on thesis the development of consciousness. I also found, interestingly, nearly everybody I met in compare essay, the consciousness new age movement, TM had been a major trigger for them, and then something had thrown them out. Thesis On Healthcare! Just seeing what it had done in terms of setting a basis from which people had then moved on and contrast into other things. Also at that time I came across somebody who quite a few of thesis, you here probably know: Tony Buzan in England, and got involved with him, a lot of work on left/right brain.

We started taking a lot of the psychological research on personal development, particularly on learning and and contrast essay things, taking that out into on healthcare, business. And a whole other area - which may not sound very spiritual - teaching in women, corporations, but that opened up and on healthcare has been something I've been doing for the last 10-12 years now. It was actually, and accounting as a career essays still is, a very spiritual process for me. For a start I consider it a forum where one can really explore how to take ideas or insights, or spiritual learnings, which are really important for me, and translate them into the language and on healthcare metaphors of somebody who thinks their only concern is achieving corporate goals, and women essay staying in the job so that they can look after their family (well, I'm putting it too simply perhaps - ) but people who see their life as basically living in the world, not as a spiritual life. Thesis On Healthcare! How can you take what I consider to be some of the key spiritual teachings, and put them in a way that they can relate to and understand and education policy derive something from. Because I believe there's no difference between me and thesis somebody in a suit, apart from the fact that he wears a suit (and most of the time I'm working in business I wear a suit anyway, so there's no difference between us at all) -we're all people with the same basic underlying search. And i always like to accounting career essays remind myself that when I finally left Cambridge after doing a degree in computer science, I very nearly joined IBM, very nearly joined their research department. But then I got offered a post doing research into meditation at London University and took that , because that's where my heart was.

But I always have to remember that if I joined IBM, where would I be now. I might still be in IBM, as a manager, or I think more likely I would probably be running my own software company in thesis, California - or probably far more likely actually, I'd probably now be retired. But I would still have the women essay same spiritual questions, inclination, and probably be much more frustrated than I am. And I am fascinated by thesis the number of people who are in business who want to explore these issues. So working in business is a different way of teaching for me, a different way of spiritual teaching. Its not 'here I'll teach you meditation', its finding a different routine. And that's a very interesting challenge. Another thing that happened in all this was coming across A Course in Miracles.

I was round at media compare and contrast essay a friend's house one day and this box of books arrived on his doorstep. He said, Oh yes, this is something that Judith Skutch has just decided to publish in the States - some book she's come across. And she said she'd send some over thesis, as soon as they were published. Some sort of course or something, let's see what it is. So we opened this box up and there inside it was some books called A Course in Miracles.

So we opened them up and started thumbing through it, and he said, This look like the sort of thing you'll be interested in women, - here, have a set - Judith's just sent them to me, I'm not sure what to do with them, have a set. So I said oh thank very much, and took them back and on healthcare put them on salvation essay my desk. This time I didn't get to read them, because a friend came the next day and said what's this? I said I don't know, its something that Judith Skutch is thesis, publishing in women essay, the States she's just found. He said,'Can I borrow it?' - Sure I said, have it! I haven't seen him since!

Although I did find his name in thesis, a magazine the other day - if he's here, shhh. I probably wouldn't recognise him - Richard are you here. It was about media compare five years later I started coming across A Course in Miracles again and again through friends, and finally decided right I'd better get my own copy, and start work on it. I went through a similar process as I went through with TM, when I first came across TM: finding the thesis same thing happening: everything turned inside out, upside down, and yet making absolute sense - both in compare and contrast essay, terms of on healthcare, my experience, and also tying it back in to other spiritual traditions. And by and contrast this time I'd read an on healthcare, enormous amount more about other spiritual traditions.

So in some senses the depth of that connection was even more powerful. Particularly I think with Christianity. Allama English! When I'd gone through my relationship with Eastern religion, I'd done a lot of thesis, work looking at the relationship between eastern religion and Christianity and the common ground. I think what the Course in Miracles did was actually really enliven in a completely new way my insight into salvation essay, what Christ and thesis the Gospels is all about. So that set me off on a whole other exploration which actually resulted in last year me going to church for the first time in about 20? 30? years probably - at Christmas which was an interesting experience - apart from coming to St.

James's and going to women in love weddings and baptisms and those sorts of things. On Healthcare! I hadn't actually voluntarily gone to church. So, the in love essay Course in Miracles set me off on thesis on healthcare a whole new thing, which - the career essays word which came up when I was thinking about giving this talk - was 'spiritual surfing'. The idea of the metaphor being how the surfer catches the thesis wave - when you catch the salvation essay wave suddenly you're carried forward. And for a period of thesis on healthcare, 5 years or so I felt like there was some wave I was being carried forward on, and development was happening in many different ways. I was going through a lot of accounting as a essays, inner awakening, a lot of insight into thesis, what spiritual development really seemed to university terms explained be, and what was actually going on in myself. Thesis On Healthcare! It was a real opening of my heart - not in an emotional way, but - I'm not sure I can find the right adjective in England, but I know it was a development of the heart that was gong on, rather than the mind. Although the process was very much one of insight and understanding of myself.

I think one thing that shifted was - that until then I think I'd seen enlightenment as something you gain, like something that happens to university of leicester explained you. And all the time meditating, doing all that stuff was 'working towards some goal' that was enlightenment, and thesis on healthcare it was going to happen when things were going to be different, because one's mind was suddenly filled with this wonderful white light, and terms whatever it was, golden light. You know you're on some amazing trip or something, to put it coarsely, that's how I started thinking about it. And just realizing it wasn't that at on healthcare all. That it was more just a recognition of what one always was, but had forgotten, and had got totally confused about in oneself. I began to see a lot more what the university terms explained zen teachers were trying to on healthcare get at. There's a zen saying that came up very early on in this period which was You are already enlightened. The only university of leicester essay problem is you don't know it.

It was one of those things you think about, and you try to analyse, and think well, that's O.K. but its no help whatsoever, cause I don't know it - so what's the help in telling me I am already - you know, one of these meaningless statements. Then I realised its like there's a fence. One side of the fence everything is confusion and you wonder what all these spiritual people are talking about.. On the on healthcare other side of the fence it is all so clear and iqbal essay english obvious, and makes absolute sense, and nothing has changed. Except you're just seeing things from the other side of the fence, the on healthcare other side of media, some line.

And the whole thing was how does one change one's perception from one side of the fence to the other. And nearly all the time one's stuck into seeing things - or how I best describe it now as through the thesis eyes of the physical world, through the eyes of the material world. The other side of the fence is seeing it through the eyes - maybe as (?who) says 'through the university essay terms eyes of God'. And when your eyes become the eyes of God it all makes absolute sense.hat's the recognition: just the shift in the way one sees things. Of course doing that is a much harder problem. But it became clearer and clearer that a changed state of consciousness is the changes perception. Things started becoming simpler and simpler and simpler.

In terms of understanding. A different state of consciousness is just a different way of seeing - that what consciousness is, is perception, seeing. So a different state of consciousness is thesis, a different way of seeing. I could go into this a lot more, but I think I should move on because of the time. There's all about of leicester essay terms explained realising how much we held onto - how much I held on to my beliefs, my judgements, my attachments to thesis things, and essay english how the on healthcare process of letting go - when I did it, the other side of letting go was all the peace, the happiness, the unconditional love that I'd been seeking - was just the other side of education policy, letting go. Thesis! And this process of letting go became very much a focus for allama iqbal essay in simple english, my own work.

As I say, its one thing to talk about it, or one thing to see it and understand it - doing it seems impossible at times. And I found myself almost coming round to realising how difficult is this spiritual journey we're on. On Healthcare! Almost in some ways it seems impossible. Women In Love Essay! And yet seeing that the key area that became clearer and clearer for me, the key area in we - in thesis, which I have to work are our relationships. In a sense we're in a relationship with everything the whole time, whether its our environment, our selves, or other people. But if we're talking about a changed perception, we're also talking about a changed relationship with what's around us. And realising more and more that the key area we're given to work with, or I was given to work with - I believe we all are - are our relationships. And the relationships that really get us are our personal relationships.

There's a teacher that some of you here may know from accounting as a essays California called Marianne Williamson, who outs it very nicely. I won't try and imitate her - she speaks at about 75 words per second in a raucous LA accent. But basically she says, You want a spiritual relationship? You think that's going to be easy? You get a spiritual relationship and that's going to be the most difficult relationship you've ever had. Thesis! We think spiritual relationships are going to accounting as a career essays be all nice and bliss, and on healthcare we all agree on the same definition of God, and university of leicester essay terms explained we all meditate the thesis same way, and hold hands and look beautiful. It isn't. A spiritual relationship, as she points out is dissertations education, going to be one that pushes every single button you've got. If it doesn't, its not doing the job. The one that makes you feel uncomfortable at every other turn. But in pushing every button you've got, it presents you with the opportunity, first of all to see those buttons, and then, if one has a really caring relationship, the opportunity to have somebody else work with you or support you in thesis on healthcare, dealing with whatever particular bit of rubbish you've just discovered.

And something Baba Ram Dass said on that - which I think has become one of my little mottos I suppose - he said, Relationships are the yoga of the dissertations education policy West. Yoga remember in its root meaning means 'one's path to unity'. Relationships are the yoga of the west, because its in the west that we get so hung up on thesis on healthcare our relationships in one way or another. And its through really using our relationships they can be our path to unity. As I say all this is not easy, it just seems in some ways to get more and policy more and thesis more difficult. I'm more and more discovering what an enemy is this little thing called the ego that one's trying to get rid of salvation essay, - how much it holds on. The last thing that wants to go is the ego. One wants to give up, transcending the ego, and living without ego, and the ego's saying 'No way mate!'. The way I define the ego now for thesis, myself is as a belief - a very core belief that runs through my life - which says, If I'm going to happy, I have to have the accounting essays world be certain ways, and thesis on healthcare have people be certain ways.

And if they're not that way then the fear is I may not be happy, and so I start trying to change things. That's the ego for me. And that ego 'creates' various 'needs' - for as a essays, security, recognition, those sorts of things - approval stimulus. And then drives me to find ways to on healthcare satisfy those needs, and gets me worried and accounting as a career fearful when I think those needs aren't going to thesis on healthcare be satisfied. And that takes over so much of the time - you know, one can talk about spiritual stuff, write about it, but is one living it? And that seems the real battle. That Armageddon - I feel more and more I'm reaching Armageddon, and salvation essay its not a nice battle.

I don't know how long it goes on for, may go on thesis for centuries. Armageddon is the battle between the Christ and the antichrist, the final battle between the Christ and antichrist. And just seeing that is a continual battle each and in love every day. The antichrist for me is the ego, the bit that is antichrist - i.e. anti my own higher knowing. The bit that wants to tell me that my salvation lies in - whatever it is, having a comfortable living space, security, not being on on healthcare the streets, approval - all these things, that's the antichrist. Dissertations Education! The Christ is the other bit that knows that all that is absolute rubbish, but hardly ever gets a chance to say it.

Coming to thesis where I am now, I suppose the salvation essay realisation: I can't do it alone. I suppose so far the journey has been very much an inner journey - and still is. But just how much one needs first of all the thesis support of others. Essays! That continual mirroring reminding of what it is that life is really about. On Healthcare! Because the whole of university terms, society is thesis, set up to condition you from birth onwards that matter is of leicester explained, primary and spirit is secondary. The truth is its the other way around, but the whole of society is thesis, telling us that. University Explained! That's one's conditioning, and every day as you walk down the street, the newspapers, the advertisements, the general conversation you have with people, nearly everything you see on television is telling you the world of matter is what's important. The reminders for me come from people more than anything now. And that is so valuable for me, its just those meetings you have with people. Its almost like how many meetings can I get in in a day.

Where during the meeting I'm reminded of thesis, what its really about. Cause its so so easy to forget, so easy to forget. Knowing it is one thing, living it is another. The other area is help from the inside. Just recently I've begun to dissertations education policy see prayer in thesis on healthcare, a new way, to essay see what prayer can be as an asking for help. Saying, This ego stuff is more than I can handle, I need help. On Healthcare! And there's a process which is important for me at dissertations policy the moment, which is one of actually turning within.

First of all recognising that help can come from one's inside - whether you call it you own self, or the Holy Spirit, whatever you want to thesis call it - the quiet voice within. Salvation Essay! I actually find it useful to remember that that's happened in the past: that one is not alone; one's not alone on the inside as much as one's not alone on the outside. Then to ask, just to thesis on healthcare ask for guidance, but not in terms of salvation essay, what to do. I've discovered it doesn't work for me to ask for guidance on what to do. Partially because I can never quite trust it. I mean how do I know this is the thesis on healthcare Holy Spirit telling me what to do, or my own garbage? Different people have different theories about how you can tell the difference. Dissertations Education! I don't know, I haven't found a way that works for me. Thesis! But what one can ask for, and in fact for me is the women in love only thing one actually needs is guidance on how to see it differently. its just 'help me to see this situation differently'.

And always what comes is on healthcare, seeing things in a different light that's usually a light that's free from the women ego. On Healthcare! Its that shift, that healing of perception out of which can come whatever action is appropriate. But that is as I say the stage I seem to in love essay be at the moment. This battle, and on healthcare recognising one can't do it alone. And to finish - I almost feel I've hardly begun on this journey of whatever it is. I think I've passed through the phase of the spiritual surfing. It ended I think about a year ago. You know how when you're surfing you eventually lose the wave that goes on without you.

The wave's gone on now. I think I understood the other day what the dark night of the women in love soul is all about. I don't know what's going to be next. Maybe, I feel its time maybe something new is thesis, about to salvation essay come in, maybe its already there. Thesis! What I've noticed always in the past is whatever I've been through, nothing ever seems to in love go away, its always something that's added to it.

As I say, T.M. was something that was very important to me, and always will be. And I think all the other phases and things that have been important and will continue to be part of on healthcare, what's important. All I can be is open to whatever's going to be of help next. Dissertations Education! And as always one cannot plan these things. I've never planned anything much in thesis, my life, particularly in the way of personal development. I think its just a question of holding the intention. All through the time I was preparing this, a line from the Course in Miracles kept on coming up, maybe just because the words are the of leicester essay explained same. Maybe we'll just finish with the thesis couple of lines - talking about inner journey.

I may get it wrong, but basically the lines are: The journey to God is a journey without distance, to a goal which never changed.

ABSTRACT Title of Thesis: DECISION MAKING IN HEALTHCARE

A Clockwork Orange and Brave New World Essay Sample. Without loneliness, how could we appreciate love? Without war, how could we appreciate peace? Binary opposition underlies the essence of our world. It is thesis on healthcare, because of this that the term Utopia, usually meaning a place of utmost perfection, is also used to mean an unrealistic ideal that is impossible to achieve. This has, in turn, spawned the allama essay english, concept of dystopia a negative utopia, being a totalitarian and repressive world where the state holds all power over nearly every aspect of public and private life.

A recurring theme in the Utopian genre is the resulting creation of a dystopia in an effort to reach Utopia. On Healthcare! Two novels which clearly illustrate this convention are Aldous Huxleys Brave New World and Anthony Burgess A Clockwork Orange, later adapted by allama Stanley Kubrick as a film. Other conventions of the on healthcare, Utopian genre include lack of depth of characterization, and the texts ability to analyse the state of the education policy, society in which it was written and to provide an array of thesis on healthcare possibilities for the future. Brave New World presents a satiric dystopia as humanity lives in a carefree, healthy, and allama iqbal, technologically advanced society. However, all forms of human expression have been sacrificed as, Mustapha Mond states, Youve got to choose between happiness and what people used to call high art. Weve sacrificed the high art.

We also find that Mond and the other World Controllers have a monopoly on historical knowledge, which ensures their positions of power. They eradicated history as it was seen as unneeded, because the people of the Brave New World are taught only things which are relevant to their place in society. Set in a dystopian near future, A Clockwork Orange shows Alex, a 15-year-old boy who roams the streets at night with his gang members, committing violent crimes for fun. Thesis On Healthcare! A Clockwork Orange follows the utopian convention of the state attempting to create a utopia by controlling the individual, as Alex is used as an example of the states power to #8220;rehabilitate#8221; criminals by conditioning them to associate violent acts with a sensation of severe physical illness. Through this, the government eliminates the very thing that constitutes Alexs humanity; as the novel says, A man who cannot choose ceases to salvation essay be a man. Burgess suggests that a society in which the state has so much power, is one in which individual liberties are crushed. In the film adaptation, the song Alex whistles on his way home from his evening of violence is actually a modern adaptation of the Funeral March of thesis Queen Mary II written by Henry Purcell in 1694.

It is as though Alex is and contrast, whistling an eulogy to the end of the thesis, world. As can be seen, it is impossible to create a Utopia without suppressing individual liberties for the greater good of the accounting as a career essays, state, which would create a most totalitarian and repressive society a dystopia. Texts of the thesis on healthcare, Utopian genre often exist to analyse the context in which they were written, and accounting career essays, offer warnings of what our society potentially could become. Written during the post World War I era, Brave New World takes a satirical look into the future as it addresses the on healthcare, struggle for peace, the development of university of leicester science, and the extremes of totalitarianism. The World State#8217;s Motto, #8220;Community, Identity, Stability#8221;, mirror how the majority of the world craved peace and stability, following the turmoil of World War I. This struggle is thesis, realized in Huxley#8217;s Brave New World, but at a price; the abandonment of individuality and the freedom of individual thought in a world kept together by extensive human conditioning. Burgess was inspired to write A Clockwork Orange during a visit to Russia, where he observed the salvation essay, repressive atmosphere of a communist nation. Thesis On Healthcare! Burgess regarded communism as a fundamentally flawed system, as he could not accept a system that sacrifices individual freedom for the public good. This is reflected in A Clockwork Orange as it seems to allama iqbal attack communism through its extremely negative portrayal of a government that seeks to solve social problems by removing freedom of choice. Thesis On Healthcare! Stanley Kubricks adaptation of A Clockwork Orange, made in 1971, differs significantly from the novel as it excludes the entire 21st chapter of the novel.

The first American edition of the novel also excluded this chapter, where Alex begins to media compare and contrast essay feel older grows weary of violence. Perhaps, given American traditions and morality, the publisher thought that having Alex become #8220;good#8221; by his own free will was not the right thing. This clearly illustrates how a Utopian text does, in fact, reflect upon the state of thesis on healthcare society during the time in which it was written. As in most works about Utopia, Brave New World lacks the education policy, complexity of characterization that marks other kinds of great novels as the characters mostly exist to voice ideas in words or to embody them in on healthcare their behaviour, rather than to represent actual people. It is policy, almost as if the totalitarian Brave New World becomes the novels main character. This lack of complexity of characterization can also be seen in A Clockwork Orange, as the only character given much depth is the thesis, protagonist, Alex. All other characters seem to exist in salvation essay order to either personify ideas, or merely to move the story along. As can be seen through the conventions of the thesis, utopian genre which Brave New World and both the film adaptation and novel A Clockwork Orange present, it is impossible to create a Utopia without inevitably creating a dystopia where the state holds all power over its citizens. #8216;Brave New World#8217; Aldous Huxley#8217;A Clockwork Orange#8217; (novel) Anthony Burgess#8217;A Clockwork Orange#8217; (film) Stanley Kubrick. Five Topics for a Master s in Healthcare Thesis

Writing Better University Essays/Referencing. By referencing the sources you use in your essay, you do a number of things. First of all, you comply with an academic convention. Secondly, you make your essay look more professional. In fact, it not only looks more professional, but its argument becomes more powerful.

Thirdly, you allow others to check your sources. This is often only a hypothetical issue, but a look through the list of your references will allow others to judge your argument quickly. Fourthly, you acknowledge your sources and on healthcare, thus admit that like everyone else, you’re a dwarf on the shoulders of the giants. The essential bits of media essay referencing require you to on healthcare provide enough information to others so that they can identify the allama in simple, source. What exactly is meant by enough is open to debate, and this is also where conventions come in. Essential is thesis, that you do provide references. Ideally, you would do so properly. It’s not so difficult, and the sooner you get into accounting the habit of referencing, the better. There are two forms to do the referencing: including them as footnotes, or use a variation of the Harvard system. Your institution may have a preference, or even a house style.

In most cases, your markers will be happy with a consistent and appropriate system. The Harvard system is on healthcare, also known as author/date, and will be described here in more detail. Within your essay, whenever you make a statement that is essentially based on somebody else’s work, you should attribute the source. You do this by stating the author(s) and the year of the publication you consulted. Where the name of the author occurs naturally in the text, it does not need to be repeated. The references are usually included at the end of a sentence, or where inappropriate in a place where the text flow is career essays, not interrupted too much, such as in front of a comma. This may be necessary, for example, if only the first half of your sentence is on healthcare, based on someone else’s work.

Switzerland seems to be the ideal place for studying the effects of direct democracy, since no other country has gone as far in terms of implementing such means (Franklin, 2002). The name of the author is included in brackets, together with the year of publication. Essays. Some styles put a comma between the two, others just a space: (Franklin 2002). Where there are two authors, both names are included: (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994). Some styles prefer the word and , others prefer the ampersand ( symbol).

Where there are more than two authors, the name of the first author is thesis, given, followed by et al. Women Essay. (which literally means and others ): (Almeder et al. , 2001). Some styles put et al. into italics, others don’t. If you have two or more references for the same argument, you should separate the references with a semicolon (; symbol): (McLanahan Sandefur, 1994; Steinberg, 1999). If there are very many references to an argument, use your own judgement to on healthcare select the most relevant ones. What should you reference? Basically references should be included to any argument made by someone else, including numbers you cite. Allama In Simple. However, statements of general nature need not be attributed to anyone. Thesis On Healthcare. A statement that the sky is dissertations policy, blue alone does not require a reference. However, if you state that the sky is blue because of a specific reason, then you should include a reference. If you use the exact words of an author (quotation), you’ll need to give the number of the page where you copy from.

This is needed so anyone can quickly check the original words, should he or she feel so. See the separate section on quotes. It’s not uncommon that you want to use the arguments of say Max Weber, even though you have not actually read this particular book. Strictly speaking, you should not reference Weber’s work for such a statement, because you have not actually read it. Can you really be sure this is what Weber said or meant? The technically correct trick is to on healthcare add cited in after the reference: (Weber, 1918, cited in Hamilton, 2002). You should always reference the work you consulted, and salvation essay, this includes the year of publication. Many books are published in their second and third editions, so giving the correct year can be helpful.

Similarly, even if a book is merely a reprint by a different publisher, give the year of the edition you consulted. The page numbers may differ. If it’s just a second print of the exact same book, use the original date. Some readers find this unsatisfactory, since Weber surely did not publish anything this year. The convention to circumvent this issue is to give both years: the year of the original publication, together with the one of the work you consulted.

Sometimes slashes are used between the dates (/ sign), others prefer the used of square brackets ([ and ] sign): Burke (2004/1774) or Burke (2004 [1774]). Another small issue occurs where an thesis author published more than one book or article in a single year, and you want to cite more than one of them. The trick here is to add letters from the alphabet after the salvation essay, year to identify which of the works you refer to. Thesis. Use the letter a for the first of your references, the letter b for the second and so on: (McManus, 1994a) and (McManus, 1994b) are two different works. To sum it up, inside the text, you give the family name of the author, followed by accounting career essays, the year of the publication. Always cite the text you consulted, because in the end it’s your responsibility that the references are correct. At the end of your essay you should include a list of references. Such a list of references provides more details than just the name of the thesis on healthcare, author and the year of publication. It’s this list that allows identifying the work cited. Each work you cited in the essay is cited once, and listed in women alphabetical order. Note that a bibliography and list of references is not technically the thesis on healthcare, same.

A bibliography is a list of relevant sources that may or may not be cited in the main text. References are the sources you cited, even if they are rather trivial. Use the heading references for dissertations your references. For books, you put the family name of the author(s) and their initials, followed by the year of publication in brackets, the title in italics, the place of publication, and finally the name of the publisher. If there are editors, give their names instead of the authors’. Thesis. If there is a subtitle to the title, this is media compare, usually separated using colons (: sign). On Healthcare. Where there are more than four authors, it’s common to use et al. after the first three, but some styles insist on citing all authors. Dissertations Education Policy. Sometimes a book is co-published by two publishers, and this can be indicated by using a slash (/ sign). Where you give the editors rather than the actual authors, you indicate this by adding (eds) after their names, or (ed.) if there is only one.

The title is capitalized. For example: Anderson, C. Zelle, C. (eds) (1998) Stability and Change in German Elections: How Electorates Merge, Converge, or Collide , London, Praeger. Granovetter, M. On Healthcare. (1974) Getting a Job: A Study of Contacts and Careers , Chicago, Chicago University Press. Essay. Grass, G. (1963) Katz und Maus , Neuwied am Rhein, Rowolth/Hermann Leuchterhand. Hall, S. (ed.) (1997) Representation: Cultural Representations and Signifying Practices , London, Sage. Halsey, A., Heath, A. Thesis On Healthcare. Ridge, J. (1980) Origins and Destinations , Oxford, Clarendon Press.

Chapters in as a a book are cited separately, especially if the thesis, book is edited. You give the family name of the author and his or her initial, the year, the name of the chapter in accounting as a essays single speech marks (‘ and ’ sign; not capitalized), followed by the word in thesis on healthcare , and english, the name and year of the editor(s). If you cite only one chapter, you can give the whole reference at the end; otherwise it’s enough to thesis give the name and year of the editor. In this case, however, the book itself needs to be included in dissertations education policy the list of references, too. For example: Allen, J. (1995) ‘Global worlds’ in Allen, J. Massey, D. Thesis. (eds) (1995).

Hardin, R. (1990) ‘Public choice versus democracy’ in Chapman, J. Wertheimer, A. (eds) (1990). Accounting. Leroy, P. Verhagen, K. (2003) ‘Environmental politics: Society’s capacity for political response’ in Blowers, A. Hinchliffe, S. (eds) (2003) Environmental Responses , Chichester, Wiley. An entry in a printed encyclopaedia or a dictionary can be cited if it was a chapter in a book. The editors are often given on the front of the reference book. For example:

Jackman, R. (2001) ‘Social capital’ in Smelser, N. Thesis On Healthcare. Baltes, P. (eds) (2004). Journal articles are cited in a way that is quite similar to chapters in a book. The main difference really is that details about the volume and page numbers are included, too. The reference starts with the name and initial of the author, the year in brackets, the title of the article in single speech marks (not capitalized), followed by the name of the journal in essay italics (capitalized), and further details. The details of journals are commonly abbreviated as follows: the volume number followed by a colon and thesis on healthcare, the page numbers of the allama essay english, article. On Healthcare. If there are different numbers to a volume, this is allama iqbal essay in simple english, indicated by including it in on healthcare brackets before the colon, if known. Online journals may not have page numbers. For example: Burt, R. (1987) ‘Social contagion and innovation: Cohesion versus structural equivalence’, American Journal of Sociology , 92:1287–335. Thoits, P. Salvation Essay. Hewitt, L. (2001) ‘Volunteer work and well-being’, Journal of Health and Social Behaviour , 42(2):115–31.

Small, C. (1999) ‘Finding an invisible history: A computer simulation experiment (in virtual Polynesia)’, Journal of Artificial Societies and Social Simulation , 2(3). Valente, T. On Healthcare. (1996) ‘Social network thresholds in essay in simple the diffusion of information’, Social Networks , 18(1):69–89. Pages on the internet should be cited where used. You should bear in mind the quality of the site before citing from it, but if you use a web site, reference it, too. There are many internet sites that are perfectly acceptable as sources for your essays. The reference includes the name of the author and initial, the year in brackets, the title of the document in italics, the word online in square brackets, the on healthcare, place of publication, the publisher, the in love essay, words available from : followed by the URL, and on healthcare, the date when the university of leicester essay terms explained, document was accessed in brackets. (2005) Politik im Kanton Zurich—eine Synthese [online], Zurich, Statistisches Amt des Kantons Zurich, available from: http://web.archive.org/web/20051224111845/http://www.statistik.zh.ch/statistik.info/pdf/2005_15.pdf [accessed 27th October 2005]. Chan, T. Goldthorpe, J. (2004) Social Status and Newspaper Readership [online], Oxford, Oxford University, available from: http://users.ox.ac.uk/ sfos0006/papers/news4.pdf [accessed 31st March 2005]. The reference therefore includes the name and education policy, initial of the author, the thesis on healthcare, year of publication in brackets, the title in single speech marks, the name of the newspaper in italics (capitalized), the date, and finally the iqbal, page where the article was found. For one page it’s customary to use the abbreviation p. , for articles running over two or more pages, the abbreviation pp. is common. For example: Cockburn, P. Usborne, D. (2004) ‘Burning with anger: Iraqis infuriated by new flag that was designed in London’, The Independent , 28th April, pp.2–3.

Handouts from a lecture can be referenced and should be referenced if they are used as the basis of what you write. It’s normally a better idea not to use lecture notes, but try to find the original referred to in the lecture. Not only will you have more control over what was actually said, but also can your readers more easily access books and journal article than lecture handouts. Thesis. The reference to a lecture handout includes the name and initial of the lecturer, the year in bracket, the title of the essay, handout in single speech marks, the words lecture notes distributed in followed by the name of the course in italics, the word at and the name of your institution, the thesis, place, and date of the lecture. In terms of giving the reference, personal conversations are very easy: the name of the person you spoke to, the year in brackets, the words conversation with the author and the date of the conversation. For example: Smith, E. (2004) conversation with the author 6th July 2004.

The same format can also be used for salvation essay personal e-mail, or instant messengers. Once again, bear in mind the credibility of your sources. Thesis On Healthcare. With e-mail messages it’s customary to include the e-mail address of the sender in brackets after the name, but it’s essential that you obtain consent from the author. It’s always a very good idea to accounting essays check with the author first. There are sometimes cases that are not so straightforward as the average book or journal article. For everything there is a solution in the academic conventions. If you refer to musical works, television programmes, or pieces of art, check with your institution how this should be done.

If everything else fails, remember the on healthcare, function of referencing, and provide a reasonable amount of media essay information for others to chase the thesis on healthcare, work. Common problems include the lack of authors, unpublished documents, or lack of publisher. Accounting Career. Where there is no author, often there is an organization. Put the name of the organization. If there is no-one, it’s customary to put the word “Anon” instead of the thesis on healthcare, author’s name. For example: IDEA (1998) Women in policy Parliament: Beyond Numbers [online], Stockholm, International IDEA, available from: http://archive.idea.int/women/parl/toc.htm [accessed 28th February 2006].

For theses it’s common to include the kind of thesis after the title, such as PhD thesis or MA thesis . Where the name or place of the publisher is unknown a very simple solution is used: leave the essay, information blank. This is particularly an issue with internet sites. Including the on healthcare, URL is in this case much more helpful than trying to guess the name of the publisher. Course materials provided to you are treated very similar to the lecture handouts. Give the name of the author, the dissertations, year in brackets, the course code if there is one, the course title in italics (capitalized), the kind of material and its title in single speech marks, place of publication, and publisher. Not put in capital letters are words like and , in , or , or with . The modern use in academia brands you a literary thief (OED, 2005). There are a number of reasons why plagiarism occurs. Dissertations Education Policy. The worst case is deliberate plagiarism (for whatever reason). Careless work may lead to plagiarism, but is not commonly considered as severe an offence as the thesis, deliberate case.

Careless work is media and contrast essay, often a sign of students working too closely to thesis the original, and this can be easily remedied. Without changing your habit, simply by including references to accounting career where you got the ideas from, and thesis on healthcare, putting speech marks where you quote, you technically are done. University Of Leicester Essay. In practice, you still might rely too much on the original and not deliver as good an thesis essay as you could. Deliberate plagiarism, often motivated by laziness, can’t be remedied directly. At the time, it may seem a reasonable risk to copy from the internet, but is it really worth it? Bear in mind that there is something in for you, too—that is university terms explained, something in addition to the grades. Thesis On Healthcare. The more you write, the easier it gets. If you work too closely to the original, there is a simple solution: don’t write the essay with the books in front of you. By so doing, there is very little danger that you copy word by word. In a way, you force yourself to make the material your own: and that is salvation essay, a good thing—it makes a better argument, your essay will be more original, and not least, you’ll also get better grades. Rather than having the original works in front of you, try using your notes.

As you still will need to put those references for the ideas you take from thesis, others, make a note whenever you do so. I use brackets with three X inside, to remind myself that I need to put a proper reference. Terms. Often I remember very well who said this, so I include, for example, (Granovetter XXX) inside the text. When checking the essay, it’s hard not to notice the triple X; and there is always the search facility in thesis the word processor. By putting a place holder, I can get on with the job of writing without interrupting my thoughts.

Equally important, I leave some traces indicating to myself that there is some more work to essay be done: finding the proper reference, for on healthcare example. If you think plagiarism is hard to detect by your marker, think again. There are a great number of signs that give plagiarized work away. Technology-wise, your markers are likely to have the same possibilities than you have if not more. If you can copy and paste something you found on the internet, it’s equally easy for your marker to find it on compare and contrast, a search engine, again. Thesis. It would, of allama iqbal essay course, be possible, to change plagiarized work to the extent that the deed is thesis on healthcare, no longer easy to allama iqbal essay in simple spot.

Usually, however, this is just as much work as writing the essay yourself. Just to give you an idea, the markers of your essay will not only have access to the same search engines than you have. There is software to scan essays for duplicates; and many institutes even have access to essay banks (sites on the internet where complete essays are sold). The most successful tool, however, is probably the human brain with its incredible ability to remember. If you copy from a colleague, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. If you copy from a set reading, chances are that your marker has read this one, too. Knowing what is on the reading list helps spot essays that refer to other works a great deal, or don’t refer to some of the core reading. Your marker can estimate how many readings you had time to read, or whether you’re likely to have read a great number of papers on the Belgian perspective of whatever issues is set in the question. An even easier sign is having the same paragraph twice in the same essay, for example. There are more subtle signs, too, such as sudden changes in style or formatting. Many people are unaware of how idiosyncratic one’s writing style is.

They are in fact so individual that writing styles can be used to determine how many people wrote a document, such as the Christian Bible (Jakoblich, 2001). Writing style includes the tenses we use, the level of formality, our own choice of words, the kinds of metaphors we put, whether we use American or British English, choices over punctuation, the length of sentences, or the use of specialist terms. Typographic signs include font size, choices of thesis where to women essay break paragraphs, spaces in between lines, and things like proper m- and n-dashes (when copying from thesis on healthcare, electronic articles). The presence or lack of references is often an media compare and contrast easy sign: for example, where there are many references inside the text, but few at the end, or where the citation style changes within a single essay. Thesis On Healthcare. A marker may get suspicious where there is suddenly a section with many references, or suddenly none. Sometimes, students even include hyperlinks in references when copying from electronic journals; and have them automatically underlined by the word processor. Even where you take care of these issues, a paragraph copied from the internet will very unlikely link well with the rest of compare essay your essay. The style may be inappropriate, or just different.

Essays from an thesis on healthcare essay bank may be internally consistent, but very rarely are they really relevant to the exact question you have been set. In summary, you can avoid plagiarism easily. This is done by writing freely without having the university of leicester terms, books right in front of you. Thesis On Healthcare. Instead, work with your notes, and take care to put references where you use the ideas from others. Don’t use the internet to accounting as a copy from, no matter how tempting it is. It will hardly ever be worth it. There is an important difference between citations and thesis, quotations. Unfortunately, confusion is women essay, commonplace; and the terms are frequently used incorrectly. Knowing your citations from your quotations is useful when writing essays. It’s essential, in fact, if you want to reference properly.

Citations are about ideas you take from others. Quotations are about the exact words used by others. This is on healthcare, really the women, whole distinction. So, when using your own words, you cite; when you use the on healthcare, words of someone else, you quote. “Why can’t a man be more like a woman?” (Blankenhorn, 1995, p.117) is women essay, a quotation, because I use the exact same words Blankenhorn did. However, when stating that families in the US are increasingly defined by the absence of thesis a father (Blankenhorn, 1995), I only use the idea, not the media and contrast, exact words.

When putting a reference, the difference between a citation and a quotation is that for a quotation we always put a page number. This is thesis on healthcare, done to enable the reader to check the words in the original context. Education Policy. In the list of references at the end of the text, there is no difference. Short quotations are included in the text, and enclosed by speech marks. Longer quotations are set apart from the main text by indenting the quotations, and thesis on healthcare, usually putting in a slightly smaller font. Longer means about dissertations education 3 to 4 lines or more. For example: It is true that many voters may be voting for reasons wholly unconnected with social inequalities in thesis any of the three dimensions. They may attach greater importance to some specific issue such as foreign affairs, or they may vote out of personal reasons or habits with which egalitarianism has nothing to do. (Runciman, 1966, p.136) When quoting someone else, you should take great care to education policy copy the words exactly.

Sometimes, you might want to thesis on healthcare change a quote slightly in order to and contrast make it fit your essay. If these changes are substantial, you should use your own words and cite the thesis, work instead. If the changes are small, use square brackets to indicate that you have changed the text. For example, you might quote Rawls (1999, p.87) that intelligent people don’t “[deserve their] greater natural capacity”. I have included the words that I changed in square brackets, leaving the rest the same. This indicates to university of leicester terms explained my readers that the words in square brackets are not the exact same as Rawls used. For reference, the on healthcare, original reads: “No one deserves his greater natural capacity” (p.87). I made the changes, because I wrote about intelligent people, and Rawls was talking in women essay more general terms. Whilst quotations can lighten up an essay, you should not rely on them too much.

Your own writing is much more important, and often text you quote was written for a different purpose. The consequence is that the quotations may be relevant in content (what is being said), but in on healthcare terms of style don’t fit well with what you wrote. Iqbal Essay. If you rely too much on quotations, you run the risk that your readers will think that you maybe don’t really know what you’re writing about: that you have not understood the material well enough. When writing an essay, particularly when writing an extended essay, it’s easiest to thesis put the references whilst you write. This is the case, because you still know where you got the idea from. I keep a place holder to remind myself that a reference is needed if I can’t remember the author right away. Women In Love. Often, I will know at least some of it, and write this down. By putting a place holder rather than chasing the reference right away, I can stay focused on the writing.

However, I also indicate that the essay is not completed. Place holders like (Baudrillard, XXX) or (XXX last week’s reading) will help me find the full references once I completed the essay or section. References are needed whenever you write an academic piece of writing. Even where you can get away without referencing, by including references your essay will be taken more serious. Thesis On Healthcare. It’s a good habit to compare and contrast put references all the time, so when you really need to—such as in your thesis—you’ll not struggle, or spend days trying to find out how to on healthcare reference a chapter in a book. There are a number of software packages such as Endnote , Refworks , Scholar’s Aid Lite , or Bibus that help you putting references. These computer applications interact with your word processor, and salvation essay, automate much of the thesis on healthcare, referencing process. They manage citations, and and contrast essay, usually let you search libraries and on healthcare, journal databases. Useful and flexible as they are, such software packages need some time to get used to. It’s thus a good idea to familiarize yourself with their working before the accounting career, deadline is menacing. For example, make sure you know how to thesis put page numbers for of leicester essay terms explained quotations.

Even if you don’t use a dedicated computer program to manage your references, it might be useful to collect references in a separate file. So, after completing your essay, copy all the references to a separate file. The next time you cite the same paper, it’ll be a simple case of copying and pasting, without the thesis on healthcare, work of formatting the allama essay english, reference. Thesis On Healthcare. Keeping the full references with your notes can safe a great deal of and contrast time, too.

A critical evaluation of healthcare quality improvement and how

T.S. Eliot’s “The Waste Land” Essay Sample. When one reads The Waste Land for the first time, it may be difficult to extract some clear meanings out of the poem. The common reader is on healthcare used to expect some uniformity and of leicester terms, wholeness, some kind of unity or continuity in on healthcare one or various aspects in any piece of writing he or she comes across. Therefore, when one has to face a poem like this one, the sensation of puzzlement, confusion and salvation essay, powerlessness is on healthcare unavoidable. Even scholars who may perfectly know and feel familiar with all the essay, allusions and intertextuality present in the poem, have often felt outraged at the obscurity and apparent lack of thesis on healthcare, cohesive meaning in media essay it. We have to bear in mind that the element that links the different parts of the poem is none other than the constant struggle between stability and change, the “proper” and the “improper”, fertility versus barrenness. If you realise this, you may approach the thesis, poem in accounting career a different way, and even if you fail to meet the “erudition requirements” that TWL seems (at first) to expect from the reader, you may extract some deeper meaning out of this Modernist masterpiece. It has often been argued that T.S. Eliot’s poem lacks a theme or argument, because there is no spatial or temporal continuity in it. On Healthcare. However, the whole poem may be seen as a series of sequences of dreamlike (or nightmarish) situations in university of leicester essay terms which we may find a constant in thesis on healthcare the opposition between two juxtaposed worlds.

First, a world full of order in which we can find a clear voice, a world where we may find a reference, a “proper” world; and salvation essay, then a chaotic one which expands into a whirlwind of voices and images difficult to comprehend, a world where the speakers are expressing their desire for reference and stability, the “improper” one. The tension which creates the desire of stability and thesis, the constant and inevitable change is what makes the poem flow rapidly from allama english one image and situation to another, as we will see later on. As Harriet Davidson points out in her article “Improper Desire: Reading The Waste Land”, the proper side of the poem shows itself in “its scholarly apparatus, its respect for tradition, and its recoil from the chaos of life”, while the improper side manifests itself in “its equally apparent lack of respect for tradition and poetic method and its fascination with mutation, degradation, and fragmentation” (p. Thesis. 2). Davidson accurately specifies that this “proper” quality does not only have to do with “propriety”, but also with the concept of compare and contrast, “property”, as well as the “jealous guarding of boundaries”. As said before, what keeps the poem running is this constant tension between two opposing forces, one which intends to keep things clear, separated and fixed, and another one which brings chaos into it, fragmentation and the eruption of desire. These two conflicting and yet necessary tendencies are displayed throughout the poem in the juxtaposition of fragments related with myths, history, art or religion (all of which imply the need for thesis on healthcare, references and stability) with other pieces related to salvation essay, the “contemporary wasteland” we are living in. These tendencies are used to contrast the “proper” order of the previous world and the “improper” chaos modernity brings to the modern one. The poem constantly moves into a seemingly glorious past in order to find some clues to meaning, a meaning that is nowadays lost. Thesis On Healthcare. In this “modern wasteland”, everything seems futile, everything seems corrupted to the very roots. We will not deal with the salvation essay, allusions to WWI because it exceeds the thesis, scope of our essay, but we have to bear in mind that this poem was written just after one the most pointless and extensive (geographically speaking) conflicts in the history of mankind.

Another aspect of this “modern wasteland”, which is closer to the surface, is the depiction of sexuality as empty, barren of meaning, progressively detached from salvation essay fertility (consider the “pub scene” of the poem in thesis Section II, or the invitation of the essay explained, Smyrna merchant to thesis, a men’s hotel and the typist home passage in Section III). Nothing is sacred in The Waste Land. Salvation Essay. The seemingly glorious past depicted throughout the on healthcare, poem becomes corrupted as well, when the boundaries become blurred. “The power of the poem…comes from its refusal to supply anything to appease the longing of propriety. The poem treats myth, history, art, and in simple english, religion as subject to the same fragmentation, appropriation, and on healthcare, degradation as modern life” (Davidson: 2). References to the past appear mixed with modern ones; there is not a clear distinction between the past and the present. As A Career. We find a clear example of this in the sixth stanza of Section V, “What the Thunder Said”: “Falling towers/ Jerusalem Athens Alexandria/ Vienna London/ Unreal” (Eliot, lines 374-377). Then it is thesis impossible to find constant entities, as boundaries become fuzzy. The desire for salvation essay, fixed things in a world where the only reference is change, metamorphosis, the improper constantly challenging the on healthcare, proper, this futile search for a clear, unchanging identity will be shown through the Babel of different voices presented throughout the poem, which leave us puzzled. Eliot fragments reality and with the in love essay, employment of metamorphosis, allows the reader to thesis, reinterpret his words (Tomlinson: 122).

Some examples of this change and metamorphosis are the different languages used by the author in the poem, going from English to French or German without warning or explanation: “They wash their feet in soda water / Et, O ces voix d’enfants, chantant dans la coupole!” (Eliot, lines 201 – 202) and the allusion to different myths such as Philomel (Eliot, lines 98 – 100) or Tiresias (Eliot, line 218). “The poem, in its interest in metamorphosis and use of quick juxtapositions, blurs the proper boundaries between things; different characters and voices confusingly mutate into each other” (Davidson 2). For example, the first section of the poem, ““The Burial of the salvation essay, Dead”, begins with a desire for stasis and anxiety about the change, growth, and sexuality symbolized by April and on healthcare, the spring rain” (Davidson 4). The comfort and (under soil) stability of the dull roots (Eliot, line 4) is now changing because of the spring rain coming in April to fertilize them and make them grow. After this, the multiple voices of the poem begin to accounting essays, appear as if they were the roots which are not fertilized yet, voices without a goal, which are under soil and thesis, correspond to characters which are not developed yet because they are confused and lost in the waste land. Lines 15 to 18 are conversations of people imprisoned in their common lives as the roots are imprisoned under soil, waiting for an external agent to provide the change, the metamorphosis, to wake them up to a real and allama in simple, fruitful life. The next lines “What are the thesis, roots that clutch, what branches grow / out of this stony rubbish?” (Eliot: lines 19-20) link with the women essay, final and previous ones in the section “’That corpse you planted last year in your garden, / ‘Has it begun to sprout? Will it bloom this year? / ‘Or has the sudden frost disturbed its bed?” (Eliot, lines 71-73) as a kind of rhetorical question about if people will really grow and wake up to a “real” life in which they develop, act and have goals or if the waste land will continue full of inhabitants lost and only worried about common things without aspirations of going further. That is why the crowd is also depicted from line 60 to 68 as kind of automatons in an unreal city walking without noticing the bells. Their stability or no-change, in this sense, will be depicted later again from lines 367 to 385 where the sound of the bells, the crowd, the unreal city, and a more detailed waste land will appear just to show that nothing has changed and that it is not the first time that it happens. In Section II, “A Game of thesis, Chess”, we find another example of dissertations education, no-change.

This whole section is occupied by the different stories of three women, they are different in social status, different in the register of the language they use, different in thesis on healthcare the settings, but are the women representing the trivial life and spiritual emptiness of the inhabitants of the waste land. As the first woman is spiritually alone in allama essay in simple english a room full of perfumes and on healthcare, Baroque decoration, the third one is dissertations also worried about banal things like false teeth, abortive pills, money, etc. just gossiping about another woman and her life. They are unable to notice that they ever do nothing significant; it’s time for them to start acting or they will keep being automatons, acting mechanically without ‘waking up’ to the “real” world we have previously mentioned. This awakening can also be seen as a metamorphosis, a topic which appears constantly in the poem, There are some classical characters related to change and metamorphosis in on healthcare the poem, such as Philomel and Procne, characters from Ovid’s Metamorphosis. Philomel was raped by Procne’s husband, Tereo who cut her tongue in order to avoid she could denounce him. The two sisters tried to take revenge but Tereus chased them, so the Gods decided to transform Procne into a swallow and Philomel into a nightingale. There is a comparison with these characters in Section II, “A Game of Chess”, suggesting that the woman who Philomel is salvation essay compared to, is unable to communicate her inner self “As though a window gave upon the sylvan scene / The change of Philomel, by the barbarous king, So rudely forced; yet there the nightingale / filled all the desert with inviolable voice” (Eliot, lines 98 – 100). Although Philomel had her tongue cut, she is suggested to sing, as the nightingale she is, and later in the poem onomatopoeic, bird sounds appear: “Twit twit twit / Jug jug jug jug jug jug” (Eliot, lines 203 – 204).

For Eliot, this nightingale is significant and transforms this waste land (Tomlinson, 129) Throughout the thesis, whole poem, we can observe a series of sounds that could seem impossible to understand for us, like “Weialala leia, Wallala leialala” (Eliot, lines 277 – 278) or “la la” (Eliot, line 306). However, it is possible to say that what Eliot tries is to transform meaning into sound (Tomlinson, 130) which is dissertations education policy also another kind of metamorphosis. Another important relation with metamorphosis is the constant change of landscape, going from a place full of water to a dry desert, with no life at on healthcare all. In Section III, we visit London, a land full of garbage “The river bears no empty bottles, sandwich papers, /Silk handkerchiefs, cardboard boxes, cigarette ends” (Eliot, lines 177 – 178) and which is covered with rats “A rat crept softly through the vegetation,/ Dragging its slimy belly on the bank” (Eliot, lines 187 – 188) The juxtaposition we mentioned previously appears constantly along The Waste Land also in a series of metaphors regarding water, fire, rocks and vegetation, symbolizing, in their many forms and states, the poem’s struggle between fertility and barrenness. Women In Love Essay. Images that deal with water (or the absence of it) and rocks are the most clear and constant along the thesis on healthcare, poem and education, the easiest to identify in different fragments. Wherever we find water in thesis on healthcare the poem we find the most calm, stable passages, as we can see in Section III, “The Fire Sermon”. The first stanza in this section, in which the speaker makes a description of the media and contrast essay, river Thames, is quite ordered. In lines 183 and 184 (“Sweet Thames, run softly till I end my song/ Sweet Thames, run softly, for I speak not loud or long.”) we find the speaker addressing the river; here we see an on healthcare implicit manifestation of a natural desire for stability, even at the expense of living in salvation essay this modern waste land from where “the nymphs are departed” (Eliot, lines 175, 179). The same happens in the fourth section of the poem “Death by Water”, in which Madame Sosostris’ cheap prophecy is on healthcare fulfilled: “Fear death by water” (Eliot, line 55).

Here we can find one voice only, which tells us of Phlebas the Phoenician, a symbol of the ‘proper’ old times who drowned. According to Davidson, this could be seen as surrendering to change, a symbol of resignation in a state of peace that contrasts with the previous section: “The peaceful surrender of the body to the water suggests an acceptance of death and accounting essays, change, a gentle memento mori in opposition to the anxiety about on healthcare, change at the end of iqbal english, ‘The Fire Sermon’” (Davidson 5). On the other hand, whenever we find settings where rocks predominate, we find the most chaotic passages. For example, at the beginning of the fifth section, “What the Thunder Said”, in which we find dry, apocalyptic voices, which have a desperate, imperious need for thesis, water: “If there were water/ And no rock/ If there were rock/ And also water/… But there is no water” (Eliot, lines 346-359). After this obsessively repetitive language and essays, use of alliteration, the thesis, reasoned, structured nature of the final stanzas comes as a relief. By changing the style, Eliot also changes how we feel about the life in the waste land. This relief by the shift in style evidently mirrors the physical and mental relief brought by the rain. Salvation Essay. Both formally and thesis, thematically, then, this final section follows a pattern of obsession and resignation. Rocks then represent a chaotic, changing world; the first image that comes to our mind is that of accounting career essays, a volcanic eruption.

We face a world of movement which needs and desires the stability water will apparently bring. But it seems that the ultimate meaning of water in on healthcare The Waste Land is none other than peaceful resignation because no one seems capable of essay, change. It is interesting how the image that symbolises stability is the same used for death (as shown in Section V and Section IV, respectively). From this perspective we could adopt an entropic reading of the poem: the only resource we have to stop chaos is thesis death. Compare And Contrast. Life is essentially chaotic, a cumulus of “improper” desires, and the only “proper” one is the desire of dying because it is the thesis on healthcare, only thing that will put an end to worries and university of leicester, the feeling of thesis on healthcare, being lost. At the in love essay, same time, human beings are always looking for a reference in thesis on healthcare proper, stable things. Essay. According to this vision, this kind of “anchor” we are constantly looking for does not exist. Thesis On Healthcare. The only solution we have to stop all this nonsense and confusion that surrounds us is death, the only perfect and absolute thing we can manage to attain. Davidson, Harriet.
